Shelby-Utica, MI - The immortal chubby kid with red checkered overalls will no longer be permanently planted in front of the Big Boy Restaurant on 21 Mile and Van Dyke roads.

This place filled that niche perfectly. I just got the standard cheeseburger with fries. It came quickly and was tasty so I was well satisfied. They had some kind of paprika seasoning salt on the table for the fries which was also quite good.

The server, Samantha, was very courteous and came back to check on me the proper amount as to not be overbearing. This location has been here forever. I visited more than 25 years after moving away. The menu has been updated, even the Slim Jim has changed a bit.

But the food was good and we had good service. We didn't make it for weekend Brunch, but it's a buffet. Came here after never being waited on at another restaurant. Staff was very nice but that's where it ends.

Typical Big Boy fare. Our college age son even declared the bathroom off limits. We have been having our breakfast here for years and are glad to report a steady, reliable consistency from the kitchen. The wait staff is quirky but very pleasant and cordial. A great place to charge up for the day ahead. Went for breakfast today, was surprised to see how busy they were, there was a snowstorm. However, I got the buffet. It was incredibly disappointing. We asked the server if the salad bar was included, she said "No, not normally, but I don't really care.

My DH got the special apple-cinnamon french toast, he was not impressed. The buffet had french toast croutons and the salad bar had frozen salad dressings. I was very discreet trying to explain this to the cashier, but as soon as I said anything, she yelled across the restaurant to the manager.

I was very embarrassed. I didn't expect anything except to not be embarrassed, I was. We have options in this area, and will not choose them again.

Cold foods kept cold, hot foods kept full and hot.

The buffet area was kept clean and picked up. This restaurant is a blast from the past. It was worn and dated as far as decor but the staff were very friendly and helpful. We ordered a take out meal and it arrived hot and packed nicely. They should really think about reducing the salt they use in the food though, it was so salty that my husband couldn't finish it. Their portion sizes were just right too, not huge. Overall it was a typical menu with nothing outstanding.

The Big Boy is just off the freeway and is easy to find. The parking lot is in need of repair and re-striping but is sound enough.

The restaurant is pleasant inside with no major defects. Breakfast tends to be a gathering of retired folk who enjoy the value. Thus the entire place is themed for them from the 's music to the breakfast bar. There are a few problems. There is only 4 choices on the breakfast menu that are healthy. The rest is "Traditional" American food. The other problem is that the restaurant only has one phone line. This is evident when you try to pay with a card at the register and then you wait and you wait and you wait for the hidden office manager to hang up so the credit card machine can dial out.

You won't spend much here and it's well cooked for the most part but don't imagine there is any sense of urgency either. Own or manage this property?
